Can Citrine Go In Water?

Citrine is a variant of quartz that is known for its orangy hues. Lots of people have nicknamed Citrine the “Success Stone” because of its ability to bring abundance and prosperity into your life.

Can Citrine Go In Water?

Citrine is known for lots of healing properties, but we will get into that a bit later. If you have found your way to this article then you’re probably wondering if citrine can go in water. All crystals need cleaning, and this is usually the way most people do it.

We will be going over everything you need to know about citrine and its relationship with water, as well as some other ways you can clean it and its healing properties.

Can Citrine Go In Water?

So, can citrine go in water? Well, the short answer is yes, but there’s a lot of debate on if it should be put in water.

When it comes to looking after crystals and gemstones, an important part of looking after them is actually understanding their characteristics and chemical properties.

The chemical properties are basically the elements that make up the stone and depending on what elements the stone contains, will tell you if you should put the stone in water or not.

An example of this is hematite. Hematite contains iron oxide that will start to rust if it comes into contact with water. Even just putting a little bit of water on your hematite will result in the iron oxide reacting with it and no one wants a crystal or gemstone that is rusted.

There are quite a few different types of crystals and stones that react quite badly when they are put in water. Malachite has copper in it that will release a toxic gas when it reacts with water, for example.

Other stones actually have asbestos in them that can seep out when they come into contact with water. This is why it’s so important to understand and get to know your crystal’s chemical properties before you start mixing them in things like water.

Should Citrine Go In Water?

So yes, citrine can go in water, but there are a few reasons why we would recommend against it. If your citrine crystal does end up in water for a long period of time, you won’t have to worry too much about any damage, but there’s always a chance it will mess the crystal up a bit.

Keeping your citrine crystal in water for long periods of time can encourage the crystal to develop cracks and in some cases, it can even break the crystal  apart (see also, ‘Why do Crystals Break?‘). Even stones that are very hard can break apart if they are kept in water for too long.

Most of these cracks you won’t be able to see either, so you won’t really know if the water has damaged your citrine. The water will cause your citrine to have tiny fissures that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

The first or even second time you put your citrine in water, you might be able to get away with it, but the more it is exposed to water, the more likely it is to develop cracks and break.

You could put it in water one time and nothing could happen for months, and then all of a sudden it could crack or break without any warning.

So, while you can put your citrine in water, it’s heavily advised that you don’t do this. It’s simply not worth the risk of damaging your beautiful crystals!

How To Clean Citrine?

If you do want to clean your citrine with water, then you can, but be mindful of the repercussions of this choice.

If you are going to use water, only hold the citrine under the water for a couple of seconds and then put it somewhere that it’s easily going to air dry.

If you’d rather not risk it though, there are plenty of other options for cleaning your citrine. Simply buffing it with a soft cloth is actually a lot more effective than you might think for example.

If you are looking to cleanse your citrine of bad energy rather than clean it, then you can try a few different methods. Let’s take a brief look at them now!

Using Other Crystals

Using Other Crystals

Lots of other stones have cleansing and healing properties, such as selenite (see also ‘How To Cleanse Selenite‘). You can use your selenite crystal to cleanse your citrine, recharge it, and remove any negative energy from it.

Other stones you can use also include clear quartz, hematite, and carnelian (to find out more, see also ‘Can Carnelian Go in Water‘).

Meditate With Your Citrine

Another popular way of cleansing your citrine or any crystals for that matter is to meditate with it. A great way to meditate with your citrine to cleanse it is to hold it in your hands while you get into a meditative state and imagine a pure white light engulfing the citrine crystal.

When you feel like the citrine is suitably cleansed, then you can go ahead and set it back in its storage space.

Smoke Cleanse

One of the most well-used and common ways to cleanse your crystals is to actually cleanse them with smoke.

This is done by a method called “smudging”. Usually, some time of herb such as sage is used in a smudge stick bundle and you light the smudge stick and wave the smoke through the crystal.

Smudging is believed to purify and cleanse your crystals and while you are performing this cleanse, the smoke will also cleanse you and your environment too!

Conclusion

So, while you can put a citrine in water, we strongly recommend that you avoid doing so. When citrine is exposed to water for too long, it can cause the crystal to crack, and eventually, it can even break.

If you do have to use water to cleanse your citrine though, just make sure that you don’t keep it in water for more than a couple of seconds. Make sure to put it somewhere that it will be able to fully air dry once you have put it in the water.
